Ring size can seem confusing, with no
world standard and no direct correlation between the size scales. Ring
size can also be different dependant upon the style of ring you need,
due to the rings design. In this article we will give you international
comparisons of ring size plus hints and tips on how to measure your
finger. Also we detail the things that need to be taken into account
when deciding upon the size.
Shown here are three of the main sizing scales with the circumference
measurement in millimetres
Your Goldsmith/ jeweller will have all the equipment
required to accurately measure your size and give you advice, however
you can fairly accurately measure your ring size at home, here's how;
-
Before you measure your
finger make sure you are not too hot or cold. If you are hot then
it is likely your finger will be slightly swollen and larger than
it would usually be, and conversely a cold finger will be smaller.
It is very important that your finger is measured at its normal size.
-
Find a piece of string
and wrap it around the base of your finger. Mark off the length on
the string and measure its length in millimetres. Match the length
to the chart above rounding up if necessary.
-
Be aware of knuckle size.
Some people have larger knuckles than the base of their fingers. If
this is the case a slightly larger size may be needed in order to
get it over the knuckle.
Styles of ring that will effect the ring size
Court/comfort fit rings, (rings curved on the inside for comfort), will
need to be slightly smaller due to their shape. Usually this would be
one size smaller however as previously mentioned knuckle size plays
a major role.
Wide band rings could also possibly require a larger size, as they will
have less manoeuvrability.
