The '4 C’s' and Price
When buying a Diamond it is very important to take into account the '4C’s'- Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat Weight. These four criteria determine the price of a Diamond. The better it ranks across these four areas the higher the value. Just because the Diamond is large does not mean it is valuable, if its colour is poor and there are a lot of inclusions then it may have a lot lower value than a significantly smaller stone with a nicer colour and clarity. Cut also plays a major factor in a stones value. If a stone is cut well then it can enhance its fire and brilliance. A poorly cut Diamond can mean that the stones natural beauty and brilliance is not fully released.
Having a certificated Diamond is a great way of knowing how your stone ranks within the grading tables of the '4 C’s', however you need to be careful about where the certification is from.
The four most recognised grading bodies are GIA (Gemmological Institute of America), IGI (International Gemmological institute), EGL (European Gemmological Laboratory) and Anchor Cert. For more information on Diamond certification see our futher article
