Cleaning does and don'ts.

You want your jewellery to look its best at all times, so knowing how to clean your jewellery in best possible way is important. There are also some commonly used methods that people use to clean jewellery that may over time cause damage.

  • Don't use toothpaste to clean your jewellery! This method of cleaning is very popular however you could be causing serious damage to you jewellery. Gold is a soft metal (especially the higher the carat), and can be scratched relatively easily. With toothpaste being an abrasive the two do not go well together. Using the toothpaste on the jewellery item can cause scratches and over time can cause the piece to loose its shine.
  • Do not use household cleaners. Most household cleaners contain bleach which can have a chemical reaction with the other metals alloyed into the gold. This is especially important the lower the carat of the gold, as the lower the carat the higher the ratio of other metals alloyed with the gold. These types of cleaners can also seriously damage gemstones set in to the jewellery (covered in a later part of the article).
  • Think twice before using cleaning substances not meant for jewellery. Using such things as denture cleaner is not advisable. These sort of products are not designed to be used on jewellery and can cause damage to the metal and particularly gemstones. Pearls and opals are especially vulnerable to these substances and using them can cause irretrievable damage.
